Indonesia’s island geography and population diversity pose unique challenges to enterprise development. High inter-island transportation and communication costs reinforce the geographic isolation of outlying provinces, resulting in severe development inequality between power centers like Java-Bali and the country’s more outlying provinces. The unavailability of business development support and isolation from larger supply chains holds back entrepreneurial individuals in rural areas from scaling up their activities. This is particularly true for women entrepreneurs, who experience more difficulty due to entrenched gender norms.
With the grant support from the Ford Foundation, PLUS and Rumah Energy launched a 1 year project in Lombok as part of the continuous effort in Developing and piloting scalable and replicable tools, methodologies, and new media strategies for delivering sustainable business development services to green economic enterprises run by rural women in Indonesia.
