Indonesia has a demographic bonus with a dominant productive age group, which presents a golden opportunity for growth. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted all aspects of life, including job availability. This is a significant challenge for young people who are expected to work and even create their own jobs through entrepreneurship. Unfortunately, only around 3% of young people in Indonesia have taken on the role of entrepreneurs so far.

To address this issue, Ideathonesia is a program that supports the formation of young entrepreneurs throughout the nation. Ideathonesia 2021 is a youth capacity development program that fosters entrepreneurship in Indonesia. The program is supported by UNDP Indonesia’s Innovative Financing Lab, the Citi Foundation, and the Ministry of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Indonesia, in collaboration with PLUS and the Community Entrepreneurship Academy.

The participants of Ideathonesia 2021 consist of a team of young people from all over Indonesia who have innovative ideas for social enterprise. They undertake various activities to prepare and develop social enterprise initiatives that can help alleviate social and environmental problems in their respective areas. The training program lasts for two weeks and is based on the participants’ baseline survey.

The training curriculum is curated and prepared to address participants’ issues in developing business ideas and impact. It includes topics such as Social Entrepreneurship 101, Introduction to Financial Planning, Social Business Model Canvas, and others. This intensive training is designed to be interactive and discussion-based, allowing participants to exchange information with each other.

Not only that, to increase insight and exposure to the participants, PLUS also presents webinar sessions with industry experts on various topics. The training approach is tailored to the needs and level of participants, encouraging participants to develop independently. After that, the activity continued with further business assistance by the Community Entrepreneurship Academy (AKM). The diverse backgrounds of participants and social enterprise ideas are a challenge for PLUS and AKM. However, feedback shows that the designed curriculum provides new (95%) and relevant (92%) knowledge for participants.

After the training and mentoring, the program continues with further business assistance by the Community Entrepreneurship Academy (AKM). The diverse backgrounds of participants and their social enterprise ideas present a challenge for PLUS and AKM. However, the feedback shows that the designed curriculum provides new (95%) and relevant (92%) knowledge to participants.

The program concludes with a presentation session where participants present their ideas and social business initiatives in front of a jury consisting of elements from government, corporations, industry experts, entrepreneurs, and academics. This presentation session is taken into consideration in determining which teams are entitled to proceed to the next stage, namely Youth Co:Lab 2021 activities.

The online implementation of Ideathonesia 2021 allows the program to reach young people from various regions. The diverse backgrounds of participants, collaboration between various parties, including industry experts, and interactive training sessions, encourage rich information exchange and provide new perspectives for young people.
